When Will the Cherry Blossoms Bloom in Portland?

My predictions for peak bloom for 2024 are based on conditions from last year. Read on for weekly updates, photos and videos! Donā€™t hesitate to reach out with any questions, always happy to help!

Portland Cherry Blossom Tracker (What to Expect in 2026) - When Will the Cherry Blossoms Bloom in Portland?

March 1, 2023: All of the trees are showing buds and one tree had about three cherry blossom blooms. With the sunnier weather coming to Portland more blooms will start popping open this week.

Based on what Iā€™m seeing out there now, Iā€™m predicting we wonā€™t see peak bloom happen for the Portland cherry blossoms for another 14 days.

A rainy day in the City of Roses but the cherry blossoms are starting to show. Itā€™s still too early to see them in full glory, but Iā€™m guessing next week will be great. About 15% of the buds are turning into blossoms and the trees are definitely getting more colorful. Check back next week for more photos.

We strolled down to the waterfront for sunset and the cherry blossoms appear to be approaching peak bloom, weā€™re getting so close!

I think this weekend will be great for seeing cherry blossoms at the waterfront. Iā€™m guessing they might even be past peak by next weekend, so try get out there very soon.

As of March 16, 2023 ā€“ weā€™re at PEAK bloom! It was so beautiful this morning I couldnā€™t stop taking photos, but nothing beats experiencing the cherry blossoms for yourself. Hope you can make it out this weekend!

2024 Portland Cherry Blossom Updates

UPDATE FEBRUARY 28TH, 2024: Some cherry trees are starting to show blooms in sunny areas. Nothing really happening at the waterfront yet. Prediction holding strong for peak bloom the week of the 15th.

UPDATE MARCH 4TH, 2024: More cherry trees are coming into bloom with the sunny days weā€™ve been having over the last week. This raises my level of confidence on my prediction of peak bloom for the week of the 15th!

UPDATE MARCH 9TH, 2024: Folks, the recent cold snap has thrown us for a loop! As a recent commenter pointed out, the buds arenā€™t showing the same progress this time of year as they did in 2020. Iā€™m revising my forecast accordingly and pushing back one week.

UPDATE MARCH 17TH, 2024: Exciting news ā€“ the cherry blossom trees are clearly getting ready to bloom! I spotted a few blooms this morning, which means the rest will follow soon. Even more exciting, thereā€™s sunshine in the forecast toward the end of next week, which should force the buds open.

UPDATE MARCH 19TH, 2024: The blossoms at the waterfront are coming out! Nowhere near peak bloom yet but next week is looking to be the week. Iā€™ll keep you posted in the next few days.

UPDATE MARCH 24TH, 2024: I visited the cherry blossoms at Tom McCall Waterfront Park and took some photos & videos (below). The blooms are starting to pop! My best prediction is next week for peak bloom.

UPDATE MARCH 26TH, 2024: The blooms are looking great. I recommend visiting if youā€™re in the area for a beautiful display. Peak blooms could be as early as March 29th if the weather cooperates!!

UPDATE MARCH 29TH, 2024

The cherry blossoms are basically peak! If youā€™re around I highly recommend going down to the waterfront to soak it all in. As long as the strong wind (like the one we experienced yesterday) doesnā€™t threaten the buds, we should be in for a peak blooms for all the whole week.

My best guess is peak will be tomorrow or the next day, tapering off slowly from there. I will try to get down there soon to grab some more up to date photos ā€“ stay tuned!

UPDATE MARCH 31st, 2024

The cherry blossoms are at peak! At long last weā€™ve arrived!! Iā€™ve shared some photos below for you to see ā€“ itā€™s absolutely gorgeous out there.

This yearā€™s peak is a full two weeks later than last year ā€“ go figure. Iā€™m hoping the weather will cooperate and the blooms will mostly remain on the trees for the rest of the week ā€“ stay tuned.

UPDATE APRIL 10th, 2024

The cherry blossoms are officially past peak ā€“ but the area is still beautiful. This year has been a wild one for the cherry blossoms in Portland with a later bloom. However, seems like we got lucky with the extended bloom season this year (they donā€™t normally last so long).

If youā€™re debating whether to see them, I suggest swinging by. At this point, the second round of cherry blossoms is starting to reach peak bloom, read the cherry blossom guide for some helpful info.

      Thatā€™s so sweet, I hope your mom makes it! Keep an eye on the tracker in the post, it shows how the blooms played out in past years, and a warm sunny stretch is usually when they pop.

    Hi again!!! Iā€™m experiencing some INTENSE winds and hail down in Oregon City ā€” not sure if Portland is experiencing the same thing but if so, do you think the blooms will have been blown away? šŸ™

      I am guessing that some ā€œdamageā€ was done to the blossoms full potential yesterday as a result of the wind storm. I will get down there hopefully later today or tomorrow to report on the action ā€“ will keep you posted!

    Swung by yesterday and def blooming and many peaked. Beautiful day yesterday and it was a great time and scene there. Next few days or so should all be out but if you are planning to go on weekend the weather aint looking good.

    Can you share where’s the closest public parking to where you photographed the trees are?

      There is some street parking off Naito for $2/hr near Davis St but spots are very limited. Thereā€™s also parking at the Naito & Davis SmartPark Garage thatā€™s inexpensive as well ($5 all day on Saturday/Sunday).

    This is amazingly helpful!! I thought I completely missed it. Do you still predict that 26-29th will be the peak blooms? Also I know yesterday was a little windy and rainy ā€” has this affected the blooms? (Hopefully not!)

    Hi!

    I love your page so much and check the tracker regularly. It’s super useful! However, I was wondering since after tomorrow it seems that there is a long stretch of rain during your predicted week. Does this mean at the time the flowers will be in full bloom, it will be rainy or with the rain delay the bloom further?

      Thanks so much. Itā€™s unlikely that the rain would delay the bloom but depending on how heavy it is could be a real damper on it. Light rain wonā€™t have much of an impact but heavy rain can diminish the beauty of a full bloom by stripping petals prematurely. The wind is the real enemy to watch out for in this case and so far Iā€™m not seeing heavy winds in the forecast. Iā€™ll be updating the tracker shortly with my latest forecast!

      I believe youā€™ll be in luck. Forecast looks like a bit of rain and cold but at least some of the blooms will be out if not peak. If we can get a day or two of sunshine in we will be looking good! Let me know how it goes for you!

      Thereā€™s a few days of sun in the forecast for this week which should push our little buds along. Peak bloom always happens suddenly. Still feeling good about the week of the 21st but there are certainly a lot of variables this year! Last year the Cherry Blossoms peak were much easier to predict. The buds are making steady progress albeit a bit delayed compared to the norm. Iā€™ll be sure to continue updating here as we get closer!

    In 2020 on March 1 the blooms appeared to be further along than they are today, March 9 2021. Peak was March 16ā€¦2 weeks after the early buds. It appears that maybe our late freeze slowed things down by two weeks which would theoretically mean a late March peak in 2021? What do you think?
