#10. Swan Island Dahlias (August & September)
Dahlias were my grandma’s favorite flower, which means I spent a lot of time searching for the best dahlia farms near Portland while planning our dates.
After several sad attempts we finally hit a jackpot: the Swan Island Dahlia Farm. Swan Island is a scenic 35-minute drive from Portland. Home to a plethora of orchards and farms, the island swells with locals in the spring, summer and fall months.
Spanning 50 acres, the dahlia farm is home to a beautiful display of more than 370 varieties of dahlias. This popular dahlia farm near Portland is open from August to September (closed Mondays/Tuesdays) and sells freshly-cut dahlias and tubers (seeds), the adventure is up to you!

Grateful Vineyard (Hood River)
Another great option for dahlias near Portland is the Grateful Vineyard in Hood River. If you’re up for the 1.5 hour drive you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful fields of flowers and stunning views of Mt. Hood. If you plan to make the trip, read: 10 Best Stops on a Portland to Hood River Road Trip.

#9. Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden
One of the best spots to see flowers in Portland is the stunning Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden. Don’t just take my word for it, the garden was recently rated one of the top 5 botanical gardens in the country.
Covering seven acres, Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden offers a dizzying display of colorful rhododendrons and azaleas. The garden start blooming as early as February, but most of the blossoms don’t hit peak until April (and even May). It’s worth the wait, you’ll be wowed by stunning pops of spring color!
- Best time to visit: April through May
- Hours: Open daily from 6am to 10pm
- Admission: $9 from March 1 – September 1 (FREE on Mondays), free the rest of the year.

#8. Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens (Early May)
Located in Woodland, Washington (35-minute drive from Portland), I first learned about Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens from my mom. She’s enamored with lilacs and was determined to get my grandma out of the house.
They enjoyed the garden so much, they turned it into an annual tradition. The passion project of Hulda Klager, a famed lilac enthusiast, you’ll find a mind-boggling display of lilacs surrounding a charming colonial home built in the 1800s.
The garden hosts “Lilac Days” from late April through mid-May, admission is $10 per person. If you’re looking for lilacs near Portland but don’t want to make the trek, I have an alternative. A closer, albeit smaller, option is to visit the stunning Duniway Park Lilac Garden near OHSU.
The Lilac Garden in Duniway Park is home to 125 varieties of lilacs, and features more than 225 lilac plants to admire. One clear standout is the ancient Japanese Lilac Tree that blooms in June. If you love the fragrance of lilacs, you won’t want to miss this beautiful flower garden in Portland.

#7. Sunflowers at West Union Gardens (August)
If you’re looking for sunflower fields near Portland, make a beeline for the West Union Gardens in Hillsboro. This sunflower field had some of the biggest sunflowers I’ve ever seen.
The family behind the farm is a husband-and-wife duo, Cheryl and Jeff Boden, who began farming at West Union in 1987. The labor of love paid off, the farm is a popular spot for u-pick berries and veggies, but especially so from late July through September when the fields are ripe with dinner-plate sized sunflowers.
This is one of the most popular sunflower fields near Portland, so you’ll want to plan accordingly. If your schedule allows, try visiting during the weekday to avoid the mad rush of crowds.

P.S. If you’re looking for more sunflower fields near Portland, I suggest Rasmussen Farms and Grateful Vineyard in Hood River.

#6. Schreiner’s Iris Gardens (May)
Located in Salem, Schreiner’s Iris Gardens is one of the prettiest flower fields near Portland. It’s also the largest iris farm in the country, making the 1-hour drive worthwhile.
Dazzling spectators with violent irises and lupine, this is a great day trip from the city during summer. The 10-acre garden is also home to beautiful peony, allium and columbine, all with different blooming seasons (check instagram for peak bloom).
Admission is $6 per person weekdays, $10 per person weekends (worth every penny!). You can purchase cut stems or potted irises at the farm to bring home as a souvenir.
Pack a picnic basket, invite some good friends and spend the afternoon catching up in a field of irises. If you’re visiting during weekends, there’s food trucks and wine tastings offered as well.

#5. Cherry Blossoms at the Portland Waterfront
The cherry blossoms at Tom McCall Waterfront Park are the cream of the crop. Folks often ask me where to see flowers in Portland and this spot gets my vote.
The 100 Akebono cherry trees that line the waterfront were gifted by the Japanese Grain Importers Association in 1990, it’s the gift that keeps on giving. From Late March to mid-April, the trees explode with unbelievable delicate flowers that completely change the landscape to the delight of onlookers.
But fair warning, this spot gets very busy during the spring season because it’s the best spot to see spring blooms in Portland. Plan ahead and try to arrive early if you want photos without crowds.
- Best time to visit for cherry blossoms: Mid March to early April.
- Hours: Open daily from 5am to midnight, there is no admission fee.

#4. The Portland Rose Garden (Oct-June)
Portland is often referred to as the City of Roses because the climate creates the perfect condition for growing roses. Nowhere is this more evident than the exceptional Portland Rose Garden in Washington Park.
Portland’s beloved rose garden is both the largest rose garden in America and the oldest. Home to 650+ varieties of roses and more than 10,000+ bushes, it’s my top recommendation for folks interested in beautiful flower fields in Portland.
The history of the rose garden is equally fascinating. Originally started in 1915 by Jesse Currey, (an Oregon Journal editor and rose hobbyist), the rose garden was created in an effort to preserve roses susceptible to eradication during World War I.

#3. Hood River Lavender Farms (Late July)
Hood River has some of the best lavender fields in Oregon. Imagine never-ending rows of stunning lavender in full bloom with Mount Adams and Mt. Hood looming in the distance. Stave off the heat with a lavender lemonade or, better yet, lavender ice cream from the farm stand.
Since there’s a handful of lavender fields to choose from, I suggest starting at Hood River Lavender Farm. It’s located next to one of my favorite wineries in Hood River, Stave & Stone Winery. Why not relax with a glass of wine surrounded by lavender as the afternoon melts away?
Then, when you’ve had your fill of blissful relaxation (can you ever?), hop over to the U-pick stand for sheers and grab yourself a bouquet to take home. Yep, this is a u-pick flower farm near Portland (the perks keep adding up).

#2. Adelman Peony Gardens (May-June)
I’m a sucker for peonies, they’re my favorite flower, so I go out of my way to seek them out. Thankfully, I don’t need to go too far to get my fix. Located in Salem, Adelman Peony Gardens is one of the largest flower farms near Portland.
With 30 acres dedicated to growing peonies, this is a working flower farm that sells bulbs to the public. However, 2 acres of the display garden are completely fair game to explore. Peak bloom typically occurs around Memorial Day weekend.
Picnic are encouraged because Adelman Peony Garden doesn’t currently have food available on site. Outdoor food and drinks are completely fair game! Also worth mention, the farm also sells fresh cut flowers and potted peonies to take home.

#1. Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival (Mid-April)
Without doubt, the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival (in Woodburn) is the most popular flower field near Portland. Every year, like clockwork, thousands of visitors flock from all corners of the state to see these beautiful tulips fields for themselves.
The annual tulip festival offers visitors an opportunity to frolic through 15 acres of densely planted tulip blooms. There’s more than a million tulips planted every year. Try visiting when the hot air balloons are out for an extra-special experience.
Woodburn is about 45-minutes drive from Portland, but I’m hardly the first to tell you the drive is worthwhile. At $20 per person, this is the priciest flower field near Portland, but that doesn’t stop the tickets from selling out (book early!).
