Portland is one of the most romantic cities on the West Coast, and I don’t think it gets enough credit for that. The restaurant scene is incredible, the cocktail bars are intimate and creative, and there’s something about walking through a Portland neighborhood at night (string lights, old trees, the sound of live music drifting out of a basement bar) that just works. My husband and I have been on more dates in this city than I can count, and we’re still finding new spots that surprise us.

Best Romantic Restaurants in Portland
Ava Gene’s
Ava Gene’s on SE Division is the restaurant my husband and I save for anniversaries and celebrations. The space is gorgeous (warm lighting, an open kitchen, big windows), the Italian menu is seasonal and produce-driven, and the pasta is some of the best in Portland. The wine list leans Italian and Oregon, and the cocktails are excellent. It’s upscale without being stuffy, which is the Portland sweet spot. Reservations are essential, especially on weekends.
Best for: A special occasion dinner. Price range: $$$-$$$$.
Canard
Canard is the casual wine bar next to Le Pigeon on E Burnside, and it’s one of the best date spots in the city for a reason. The space is small and lively, the menu is creative small plates (duck confit, deviled eggs, seasonal crostini), and the natural wine list is interesting without being intimidating. It’s the kind of place where you order a few things, share everything, and end up staying longer than you planned. No reservations, so go early or be ready to wait.
Best for: An easy, fun date that doesn’t feel planned. Price range: $$-$$$.
Langbaan
Langbaan is a hidden Thai tasting menu restaurant tucked behind PaaDee on SE 28th. You enter through the main restaurant and walk through a curtain into a small dining room with about 24 seats. The multi-course Thai menu changes frequently and uses Pacific Northwest ingredients in ways that are genuinely surprising. It’s one of the most unique dining experiences in Portland and feels like you’re in on a secret. Reservations are required and go fast.
Best for: Impressing someone who thinks they’ve done everything in Portland. Price range: $$$$.
Mediterranean Exploration Company
MEC in the Pearl District is one of the most beautiful restaurants in Portland. The dining room is airy and bright, with Middle Eastern-inspired design details and an open kitchen. The menu covers the Eastern Mediterranean with dishes like lamb kofta, hummus that ruins all other hummus for you, and wood-fired flatbreads. The cocktails are inventive and the vibe is energetic without being loud. It’s a great first-date restaurant because the food gives you plenty to talk about.
Best for: A lively dinner with great atmosphere. Price range: $$$.
Castagna
Castagna on SE Hawthorne is Portland’s most refined dining experience. The tasting menu is multi-course, ingredient-driven, and quietly beautiful. The space is minimalist and calm, and the service is impeccable without being overbearing. This is the restaurant for the big dates. The ones where you want to slow down and make an evening of it. They also have Cafe Castagna next door for a more casual (but still excellent) option if the tasting menu feels like too much commitment.

Best Date Night Bars in Portland
Bar Diane
Bar Diane is a tiny wine and cocktail bar in NW Portland that feels like it was designed specifically for date night. The space is small, dimly lit, and romantic in a way that doesn’t try too hard. The wine list leans French and the cocktails are thoughtful. My husband and I have spent entire evenings here just working through the wine list and talking. It’s the kind of bar where three hours passes without you noticing.
Teardrop Cocktail Lounge
Teardrop in the Pearl District has been one of Portland’s best cocktail bars for almost 20 years, and it’s still one of the most romantic. The long bar, the low lighting, the floor-to-ceiling windows looking out on the Pearl. The cocktail menu rotates seasonally and the bartenders are among the best in the city. Les Caves
Les Caves is a wine bar in the basement of a building on SE Pine, and it’s one of the most atmospheric bars in Portland. The space is cave-like (hence the name), with exposed brick, candlelight, and a wine list that focuses on natural and small-production wines from France and Oregon. They also have a small food menu with charcuterie and cheese plates that pair perfectly. It’s the bar equivalent of a blanket fort for adults.
Hey Love
Hey Love on E Burnside is a restaurant and bar inside the Jupiter NEXT hotel, and it’s one of the prettiest spaces in Portland. The design is mid-century modern with lots of plants, the cocktails are excellent, and the patio (open in summer) is one of the best outdoor drinking spots in the city. It’s a great spot for a pre-dinner drink or a full evening if you order from the food menu too.
Date Night Activities Beyond Dinner
Walk the waterfront at sunset. Tom McCall Waterfront Park along the Willamette River is beautiful in the evening, and if you time it right, you’ll catch the sunset over the West Hills with the city bridges lit up. Catch a show at Revolution Hall. This converted high school auditorium on SE Stark hosts great live music, and the rooftop bar has some of the best views in Portland. Check the calendar before your trip. Even if you don’t catch a show, the Roof Deck bar is worth a visit on its own.
Browse Powell’s City of Books at night. Powell’s is open until 9 PM, and browsing the stacks after dinner is one of the most Portland date activities imaginable. The rare book room on the top floor is particularly romantic if you’re into that sort of thing (and if you’re in Portland, you probably are).

Date Night by Neighborhood
Pearl District: MEC for dinner, Teardrop for cocktails, then a walk through the gallery district. This is the most polished date night route in Portland.
SE Division / Hawthorne: Ava Gene’s or Castagna for dinner, then walk to Vintage Cocktail Lounge or Les Caves for a nightcap. This is my husband’s and my go-to route.
NW Portland: Dinner at St. Jack or Bamboo Sushi, then Bar Diane for wine, then a walk through Nob Hill. The most romantic neighborhood in the city at night.
E Burnside / Kerns: Canard for small plates and wine, then Hey Love for cocktails. This area has the most energy on a Friday or Saturday night.
Tips for Date Night in Portland
Make reservations. Portland’s best restaurants are small and popular. For any restaurant on this list, book at least a few days ahead, and a week or more for weekend dinners at Ava Gene’s, Langbaan, or Castagna.
Dress however you want. This is Portland. You can show up to a $200 dinner in jeans and a nice shirt and nobody blinks. The city’s dress code is “whatever makes you comfortable,” and that applies to the fanciest restaurants too.
Use rideshare. If you’re doing dinner plus cocktails, don’t drive. Lyft and Uber are reliable in Portland, and the best date night neighborhoods (Pearl, Division, NW) are all well-served.
Thursday is the sweet spot. Portland’s restaurant and bar scene peaks on Thursdays and Fridays. Thursday gives you the best energy with slightly smaller crowds than Friday or Saturday.
